Creating a Fun, Safe Place to Learn

Sudden Industries creates a safe new digital world, Funbrain Jr., where pre-schoolers and kindergartners get a running start to learning.

The Story

Funbrain, the Internet's #1 educational gaming site for K-8 kids, wanted to attract a new audience of early learners, ages 2 to 6 and their parents. They not only wanted to provide a safe platform for games, stories and printables, but they also wanted to create a unique world that motivated children to play and learn, following in the footsteps of their success with brands like Poptropica and Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

The Challenge

  • Developing a new intellectual property that stood out in a very crowded marketplace of early learning brands
  • Creating a child-friendly, parent-approved safe digital world for young learners
  • Communicating and proving the value of this new brand to the parents of this audience
  • Translating Common Core State Standards (CCSS) into skill-building apps, games, stories and printables

Our Solution

With the large number of brands in the marketplace trying to captivate early learners, Sudden knew the best way to get attention was by creating a brand story that resonated with the parents of that audience.

To accomplish that, Sudden created Funbrain Jr., a colorful, engaging and safe fantasy world, populated by a humorous cast of characters including "Brainy Blueberry", "Captain Buckleswash" and "Berry Pinkwad". The characters lead children through early math and literacy games as well as original stories that emphasize creativity, imagination, community and friendship.

Sudden also helped Funbrain strengthen its relationship with parents by developing a Kindergarten Readiness app that provides parents a comprehensive and interactive checklist to assess skills in the areas of early math and literacy; cognitive development; self-care and motor skills; and social/communication skills.

The Results

Funbrain Jr. out-delivered in many areas:

  • Funbrain Jr. is now a new intellectual property that successfully engages children through original stories, games and workbook printables and has the capabilities to grow into other media spin-offs as well
  • The line of Funbrain Jr. digital products substantially extended the existing Funbrain audience to include pre-schoolers, kindergartners and their parents, who were not previously aware of the brand.
  • Funbrain Jr. has become the definitive resource for parents who are assessing their children’s readiness for kindergarten, with a line of apps that have exceeded all expectations as to number of downloads and positive reviews.
  • Winner of the 2013 W3 Award for Best Children's Site
  • Winner of the 2013 Davey Award for Best Children's Education Site
